A Pictorial Record of Cork’s Historic South Parish

Using the skills and artistic eye of our members, we aim to capture and preserve the vanishing views, historic buildings, unique locations, and other fascinating aspects of the South Parish area of Cork. This project seeks to document elements distinctive to this quarter of Cork, many of which are fading with time.

Relying on a variety of resources – verbal accounts, written histories, and other sources – we will locate and photograph sites of historical, cultural, and folkloric significance, ensuring that these invaluable parts of Cork’s heritage are not lost to future generations.

From its earliest days, the South Parish has been central to Cork’s story. It has seen the first settlers, the influence of its patron saint, and has contributed to Cork’s reputation as the Rebel County. Its industries, schools, and sporting traditions all contribute to the heartbeat of Cork. This area’s evolution from narrow lanes on hilly ground to a vibrant community south of the river marks it as a vital part of the city’s heritage.

Project Goals
  • High-Quality Images: Our goal is to create a collection of high-quality images that are not only visually captivating but also serve as an archive for future generations.
  • Public Exhibition: We hope this body of work will culminate in an exhibition, open to the public, celebrating the people of South Parish and those with a connection to the area.

Member Participation

We invite all members to participate in this project. There will be several group outings throughout the year, and we encourage members to explore the area independently, photographing locations that contribute to this collective vision.

Target Completion: The aim is to have exhibition-ready images by May 2025.
